Modded Xbox 360 Controllers

If you are a casual gamer then you probably wouldn’t know much about modded controllers. A modded (slang for modified or modification) controller is a basic Xbox 360 controller that has been taken apart so that it could be customized to fit the user in some way. The most popular types of modding a controller are for either performance, visual effects, or some combination of the two.

A standard Xbox 360 controller is one that comes exactly the way that the manufacturer had created it. It is created for gameplay usage and every single controller can be purchased exactly the same as every other controller (other than a few different options such as the color of the controller itself). When some users want to make a change to their typical game play, however, they are able to find different ways to modify their controllers.

If you want to simply make your controller look different, then you can change the LED lighting system inside the controller so that it will glow colors such as red or purple versus the standard Xbox 360 neon green or cover it in a customized skin. While this doesn’t do much (actually, nothing) for performance, it can be a subtle feature that a gamer would love to have. It is a change in the style and truly allows for personalization of an item that would otherwise not be possible.

The more practical reasons for modding a controller would be to actually increase performance as it relates to the gaming itself. One simple method of doing so is replacing the small thumb joysticks with a different style that usually improves (or at least changes) the grip of the joystick. While it can be a small and often overlooked feature, nothing can be more frustrating for a gamer than being set up for success in-game and then have a thumb slip right off the joystick from sweat or grease.

Another modification that is available is options that you can add to your controllers which create a “burst” effect automatically. Imagine if you are playing a game that forces you to repeatedly tap a button on the controller. Rather than having to physically punch the button yourself multiple times which can either hurt your thumb or even possibly hurt your controller, you can use the different burst features. These different features allow you to click a button on the controller once and have the game respond as if you were continuously pressing the button. While some burst settings might only be set for two or three quick taps, others could be set for half a dozen or ten; it all depends on which style works best with your current game.

Overall, there are different styles of modding games for both visual and performance appeal. The one that you choose should be specific to your wants and needs. There are many options as well as places for you to mod your controller, as well as places that will give you instructions on how to mod them yourself.
